SOCCER TRYOUT PROCESS

REGISTRATION
At Houston Wolves S.C., we believe that tryouts should be more than just an evaluation — they’re a chance for players to challenge themselves, show their potential, and experience our coaching environment. Our goal is to provide a supportive and thorough process that helps players find the right team for their development.
All players must register online prior to attending tryouts.
Registration is free and confirms your spot at the correct session based on birth year.
Step 1: Check-In & Warm-Up
When players arrive at the tryout venue, they’ll check in with our staff and receive a numbered bib for identification. After check-in, players begin warming up with light movement and ball work.
This portion is used to observe technical basics — dribbling, passing, and receiving — in a low-pressure environment. It also gives players a chance to settle in and get comfortable.
Step 2: Small-Sided Games & Tactical Play
After warm-ups, players will participate in small-sided games such as 3v3, 4v4, or 7v7 depending on their age group. These games allow our coaches to assess close control, decision-making, awareness, and individual creativity.
For older age groups, we’ll also use larger-sided scrimmages (9v9 or 11v11) to evaluate positional play, movement off the ball, and tactical understanding. We are looking for players who can adapt, communicate, and show composure in a game setting.
Step 3: Attitude, Effort & Coachability
While skill is important, we place a strong emphasis on attitude and character. Coaches will be observing each player’s work rate, ability to listen and apply feedback, interactions with teammates, and overall mindset. Players who demonstrate determination, resilience, and a positive attitude stand out — even if they are not the most technically advanced.
Step 4: Coach Evaluation & Placement Decisions
After tryouts, our coaching staff will meet to review their notes and impressions for each player. Team placement decisions are based on technical ability, tactical awareness, positional needs, and a player's fit within a team environment.
Families will be notified by email within 24 hours of the final tryout session. Players not placed on a team may be invited to join one of our developmental programs, such as training-only groups or future evaluations later in the season.
